MONTICELLO – The Sullivan County Clerk’s office has a new way to keep busy, processing a rapidly growing number of county residents wanting a gun.
Clerk Dan Briggs told the County Legislature’s Government Services Committee on Thursday that in 2016, the number of permit applications was almost triple what it was the previous year.
“2016, new pistol permit applications were 1,001; 2015, that number was 368,” Briggs said.
The clerk related another significant statistic, about who wants that kind of protection.
“Good percentage of the people coming in now, they’re females, looking to protect themselves.”
Looking ahead and adding to the work will be provisions of the SAFE Act, adopted by the state legislature as one of the first orders of business in the 2013 session.  One provision is re-certification of permit holders every five years.  That kicks in a year from now, in January 2018.
