KINGSTON – The City of Kingston will bond $125,000 to pay for a pilot project of electronic metering for its parking lots.  The common council’s Finance Committee approved the effort Monday night.,
It had been pushed by Mayor Steven Noble.
“Now with this new technology, folks will be able to pay for their time. It has been shown to create traffic in Uptown business areas when we have people being able to pay for their parking because they are more apt to move along once they pick up their food or do their shopping and it allows more space for parking,” Noble said.
Under the plan, electronic kiosks will be placed in municipal parking areas, allowing the use of debit and credit cards for parking fees. Also, it will accompany the release of a smartphone app that will allow drivers to pay at street-side, as well as off-street, metered parking via the app.
Mayor Noble said the project is a demonstration to get the community used to the technology.
“This is our trial demonstration project to be able to see how these kiosks work, be able to learn about them and to be able to have people learn how to use them,” said Noble. “We believe that it will make it that much more convenient and people will get much less in the amount of tickets because that’s really what people hate about the parking system are the tickets.”
Both the electronic kiosks at municipal parking and the smartphone app are set to be released in tandem by spring of this year.
