KINGSTON – Ulster County Comptroller Elliott Auerbach has begun his risk assessment of county departments in 2017 with a questionnaire to all units of county government.
The assessment seeks to promote best practices while safeguarding against waste, loss and misuse of taxpayer money, he said.
“It is a self-assessment that begins to help us establish the context of risk, identify those risks, and then allows us to analyze, evaluate and eventually mitigate any of the risks,” Auerbach said. “It is a tool we have used in the past. It also allows us to create an audit plan based around the responses as we see them.”
The comptroller said whether it is identifying outsourced activities, programmatic restructuring, or recent outside audits or investigations, it is the job of his office “to keep abreast of the current operations of the county.”
