HIGHLAND – A head-on crash that shut down the Mid-Hudson Bridge
between Highland and Poughkeepsie Wednesday morning resulted in two deaths.
The crash at the eastbound entrance to the bridge on Route 44/55 involved
a car that had just fled from a stabbing in Poughkeepsie, police said.

State Police said a vehicle driven by Steven Vaughan, 32, of Poughkeepsie
crossed into the opposite lane of traffic and struck another vehicle

head-on. That car was driven by Mark Ashby, 50, of Accord. Both men were
pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in Ashby’s car was transported
to Westchester Medical Center with facial and internal injuries.

Poughkeepsie Police said shortly after 2:30 in the morning, they received
a report of a woman stabbed in front of 130 Mansion Street. A 39-year-old
Hyde Park woman was found stabbed in the neck. She was transported to
a local hospital where she underwent surgery and was listed in very serious
condition.

The investigating officer at the stabbing observed the car fleeing the
scene making a left from Mansion Street onto Columbus Drive headed toward
the Mid-Hudson Bridge.

Moments later the accident was reported.

State Police were assisted at the scene by Town of Lloyd Police, City
of Poughkeepsie Police, the Ulster and Dutchess County Sheriff’s
office, Highland Fire Department and New York State Bridge Authority.
