CATSKILL – Beginning January
9 and continuing through November, the New York State Bridge Authority
will resume construction on the sidewalk on the Rip Van Winkle Bridge.
The $5.4 million project will improve the pedestrian walkway and is part
of the Hudson River SkyWalk project, a scenic pedestrian trail linking
the Olana State Historic Site in the Town of Greenport to the Thomas Cole
National Historic Site in the Village of Catskill.

In December, the SkyWalk project was awarded $875,000 for phase two through
the Department of State’s Local Waterfront Revitalization Project
as part of the Regional Economic Development Council initiative.

The second phase will consist of construction of scenic lookout points
and pedestrian safety improvements along the sidewalk of the bridge.
During construction, pedestrians will not be able to cross the bridge
on the sidewalk from Mondays through Fridays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. When
they reach the construction site, they will have to turn around and walk
back to the side from which they started.

Construction of the scenic lookout points on the sidewalk will require
a full 24-hour closure for up to four days per lookout.
