Three arrested for breaking into home, assaulting owners in bed

GREENPORT – Three men are under arrest by the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office on charges that they broke into a house on Middle Road in the Town of Greenport just before midnight on Monday, November 7 and attacked the two residents who were sleeping in their bed.
The intruders turned off the power before entering the bedroom, then assaulted the residents and then fled on foot.
Sheriff’s deputies and State Police searched the neighborhood and located the three around 8 a.m. Tuesday. They made admissions of their involvement when interviewed.
Arrested were Derek Peeters, 23, of Philmont; John Day, 21, of Greenport; and an 18-year-old from Chatham, whose name police did not release.  They were all charged with felony burglary and two counts of misdemeanor assault and are in the Columbia County Jail without bail.
The male victim was transported by Greenport Rescue Squad to Columbia Memorial Hospital, treated for a laceration to his arm and later released. The female victim was also injured and was treated by the ambulance squad, but declined to go to the hospital.
The sheriff’s office was also assisted by the Columbia County District Attorney’s Office.
