NEWBURGH – The Newburgh Police Department will receive a $143,000 state grant to establish a non-fatal shootings initiative.
The one-year pilot program will fund one police detective, one district attorney investigator and a crime analyst to work on long-term cases where victims are non-cooperative, said Police Chief Daniel Cameron.
“The law enforcement field and the prosecution field are trying to find innovative ways to charge people with these crimes as well as prosecute these crimes,” the chief said, noting the state thought Newburgh would be “an ideal place” to start such a program.
Cameron said non-cooperative victims have become a nationwide trend and it is hoped the new program will assist the police in solving those cases.
