BUCHANAN – Riverkeeper and other environmental groups filed a motion to stay construction of Spectra Energy’s Algonquin Incremental Market (AIM) pipeline projects.
The groups argue enlarging natural gas line, which passes right by Indian
Point, would create a disaster if the fuel is allowed to flow, said Riverkeeper
staff attorney Jennifer McCave.
“As part of that challenge, we, last week filed a motion to stay construction of the project,” McCave said. “We feel at this time that it is an imminent situation of there is a risk of catastrophic safety consequences if the gas is turned on in the pipeline. If the pipeline explodes, Indian Point will go with it.”
McCave said the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission “has a legal
responsibility to protect public safety by requiring an independent engineering
analysis of the catastrophic safety risks of placing a pipeline next to
a nuclear power plant.”
Meanwhile, Jerry Nappi, the spokesman for Indian Point, said the “anti-nuclear
organization is fear-mongering again and their statement has no basis
in science or engineering.”
