SHANDAKEN – One year after a young tuber was killed in the Esopus Creek, work has been completed to remove “the strainer” and replant the embankment along the Esopus Creek in Shandaken.
The Strainer consisted of enormous tree trunks and other debris that washed downstream by natural erosion and flooding events. It created the deadly hazard that claimed the life of Jordyn Engler in September 2015.
As a precautionary measure with anticipated flooding expected from Hurricane Joaqulin, the state National Guard removed the strainer debris from the creek.
With concerns the debris would wash back into the Esopus, it was removed
from the bank permanently with funding approved by the Ulster County Legislature.
