Over 600 freshman start classes at Vassar College

TOWN OF POUGHKEEPSIE – Some 660 freshman began classes at Vassar
College in Poughkeepsie on Monday. Those new students represent about
27 percent of the 7,306 applicants to the four-year, liberal arts college.

A total of 68 percent of the new class members were ranked in the top
10 percent of their high school class. The class is diverse in a number
of ways – 33.5 percent are students of color, 88 percent are first-generation
college students, and some 16 percent are international with either foreign
or dual citizenship.

The class comes to Vassar from 44 states and 30 countries, with international
students from Albania, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Bulgaria, Burkina Faso, Canada,
China, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Egypt, Germany, Ghana, Greece, India, Jamaica,
Japan, Kenya, Korea, Mexico, Nigeria, Norway, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore,
Swaziland, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, United Kingston and Vietnam.
