WHITE PLAINS – A male former state corrections officer at the all-women’s
Bedford Hills Correctional Facility in Bedford was sentenced on Wednesday
to one to three years in state prison for engaging in a sex act with an
inmate.
Rasheen Smalls, 35, of Yonkers, had been convicted of criminal sexual
act as a felony and official misconduct as a misdemeanor.
On July 28, 2015 at about 6:12 p.m., while on duty he engaged in a sex
act with a female inmate in a utility closet on a housing unit.
Under state law, prisoners are incapable of consent to any sexual acts.
Smalls has received training from the prisons department on the inappropriateness,
illegality and avoidance of personal relationships with inmates and the
illegality of officers engaging in sexual activity with inmates committed
to state custody.
He must also register as a sex offender.
