SAUGERTIES – Saugerties Police responded to Route 9W in the area of the Barclay Heights Diner Friday afternoon for a reported three-car accident.

Police say the driver of the pickup fell asleep, triggering the mess

Investigation by police established that Joshua Wolven, 27, was operating a pickup northbound when he fell asleep behind the wheel.  The pickup veered across 9W and struck an oncoming minivan operated by Amanda Tuccillo, 41, of Saugerties, causing extensive damage to the minivan. The pickup then continued north, striking a second southbound vehicle, a station wagon,  head-on.
The driver of the station wagon, Melody Helmich, 51, of Catskill, was taken to the Health Alliance Hospital Broadway Campus in Kingston for treatment of neck and back injuries.
The other six people involved in the accident, including four children, were not hurt.
Wolven was ticketed for failure to stay right.
Saugerties Police were assisted at the scene by DIAZ Ambulance, Glasco Fire Department and State Police.
