Poughkeepsie Fire Department awarded federal grant

POUGHKEEPSIE – The Department of Homeland Security granted the Poughkeepsie City Fire Department $165,000 to purchase personal protective equipment for firefighters.  That will include jackets, pants, helmets, gloves and other protective gear to replace current equipment which averages about 10 years old.
Fire Chief Mark Johnson said being a busy urban department, their protective gear “has taken a beating.” The federal funding is “essential to the safety and wellbeing of our firefighters,” he said.
The grant, from the Assistances to Firefighters Program was announced by Senators Schumer and Gillibrand.
