GOSHEN – A Harriman man pled guilty in Orange County Court on Tuesday to a charge of attempted robbery in connection with the November 24, 2015 attempted robbery and shooting of a man outside a Harriman deli.
Under the terms of the plea agreement reached, Matthew Bauman, 26, of Harriman, will receive 11 years in state prison and five years of post release supervision when sentenced in May.
At the time he pled guilty, Bauman admitted to stealing his father’s licensed handgun and going to the Quick Stop Deli on River Road in Harriman during the evening hours with the intent to rob the store to support his heroin addiction.
He confronted a man outside the deli, pulled the gun with the man immediately running away. At that point, Bauman shot the victim in the back of the shoulder. The bullet traveled through the man’s shoulder and then through his arm. The injuries were not life-threatening and the man was treated at Westchester Medical Center.
“Tragically this case once again demonstrates how drug addiction fuels much of the violence that plagues our communities,” said District Attorney David Hoovler. The DA said the victim could have been killed or more seriously injured had the bullet struck him elsewhere.
Had the case gone to trial, Bauman’s father, who was also a victim, would have been compelled to testify against his son.
