WASHINGTON – Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney (D, NY18) wants to take a different approach to dealing with the drug problem by establishing a federal Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion program.
Maloney said the program would be modeled after similar ones on the local
level.
“Instead of running somebody through the criminal justice system, this allows police at their option, to divert immediately to drug treatment people who would otherwise be arrested and the idea on the federal level is to get the Justice Department involved in funding pilot programs to continue to see how this approach works and to put some federal resources behind it,” he said.
Maloney and Congressman Richard Hanna (R, NY-2) heard from police chiefs from Albany, New York and Gloucester, Massachusetts.
