WASHINGTON – US Senator Charles Schumer is urging major landline and mobile phone carriers to make robocall-blocking technology available to all customers and to make consumers aware of the service.
Despite federal “do not call” rules, individuals continue to receive unwanted telemarketing calls – close to 3.6 million complaints filed last year for violations of the do not call registry.
The senator has supported federal legislation that would increase punishments for telemarketing companies that continue to make robocalls. The bill would punish those companies that use those calls to dial cell phones or residential phones at $20,000 per violation with up to 10 years in prison.
