Newburgh develops property tax policy

NEWBURGH – Saying it is unfair for property owners who keep up their properties to pay the same taxes as those who let theirs run down, Newburgh City Manager Michael Ciaravino is assembling a task force to look into ways of making the rates more equitable.
Ciaravino wants to consider penalizing those who do not take good care of their real property.
“At looking at other places around the world, there are some areas where if you neglect your property, to pay a higher tax than those who are paying attention and keeping up their property,” he said. “So, what we want to do is disincentivize bad home ownership, bad property ownership, and at the same time, do our job to ensure that we are holding ourselves as well as all others in the community to the same standard.”
Ciaravino’s mission to clean up Newburgh includes putting an end to illegal dumping and just like law enforcement says “If you see something, say something,” he urged residents to call the police, City Hall or public works if they see
