PEEKSKILL – A draft work
plan for remediation of a state brownfield site in the City of Peekskill
is under review. The Lofts on Main site is located at 922 Main and 921
Diven streets.

The State Department of Environmental Conservation is accepting comments
on the plan through December 13. The investigation will define the nature
and extent of contamination in soil, surface water, groundwater and any
other parts of the environment that may be affected.

Preliminary investigation work has found soil contamination across the
site including arsenic, lead, and mercury at levels that exceeded the
restricted residential recommended soil cleanup objectives. An area of
the property was also found to contain some semi-volatile organic compounds
above residential cleanup objectives.

The site is known to have been used for residential, commercial, and possibly
manufacturing purposes since at least 1887. Those uses included furniture
and upholstery stores, furniture and shade companies and a fuel corporation.
Some of those activities have the potential to have handled and used solvents,
paints and other chemicals.
