ALBANY – October unemployment continued the decline that the Hudson Valley has been experiencing for the past several months as Columbia County had the lowest rate in the state at 3.5 percent.
Putnam County, at 4.1 percent unemployment, was second in the region while Dutchess and Rockland counties were tied for third place with 4.2 percent of joblessness.
Orange, Ulster and Westchester counties were all ranked fourth with 4.3 percent unemployment while Greene County, at 4.8 percent, was fifth and Sullivan County, with 5.0 percent, was sixth.
State Labor Department analyst John Nelson said the declines are good news, but for how long they trend will continue is anybody’s guess.
“No self-respecting economist will venture to guess what could happen later on down the road, but certainly the regional economy is tied to the national economy, so as they move, so do we,” Nelson said. The good news is the region is home to several Fortune 500 companies, Nelson said.
The low unemployment figures are a sharp contrast to the numbers that reached or exceeded double digits during the Great Recession several years ago.
