Off-duty cop in critical condition following Thruway crash

WOODBURY – A Highland
Mills man, who is a New York City police officer, is in Westchester Medical
Center with head trauma and internal injuries after the 2015 Jeep Wrangler
he was driving struck the rear of a 2003 Hyundai while the two vehicles
were traveling northbound on the Thruway Sunday night.

State Police said the accident occurred around 8:35 p.m. between Exit
15A in Sloatsburg and Exit 16 in Harriman.

The preliminary investigation determined the Jeep, driven by off-duty
NYPD Officer Alexis Penate, 32, struck the rear of the Hyundai, Aaron
Jeronimus, 29, of Wallkill, lost control and overturned several timed
ejecting Penate. He was listed in critical condition at the hospital.

The other driver and a passenger in his car were uninjured.
