ALBANY – A federal grand jury convicted two Greene County people with conspiracy to commit mail fraud, five counts of mail fraud, and theft of government property.
The jury reached its decision in Albany last Friday following a two-week trial in which John Caltabiano, Jr., 48, of Catskill, and Colleen McCarten, 43, of Coxsackie, faced the charges. They each face up to 20 years in prison on each conspiracy charge, and up to 10 years on the theft of government property count.
The two conspired to steal Social Security Disability and Workers’
Compensation benefits by falsely presenting Caltabiano as completely blind
to the SSA, state Workers’ Compensation Board and Travelers Insurance.
Surveillance video showed Caltabiano driving, shopping and otherwise moving about without assistance.
