ELLENVILLE – A 14-year-old Town of Wawarsing boy was placed in the custody of his parents pending further investigation into an alleged threat to commit a shooting in Ellenville High School on Wednesday morning.
When school officials received the report, authorities set precautionary security measures into place.
About an hour after the threat was made Thursday morning, the target of the investigation was identified and located at a residence on Berme Road in Wawarsing. A search was conducted of his residence, computer and cell phone. No weapons or access to weapons were found.
The investigation is continuing.
“Throughout the United States tragedy after tragedy has unfolded in our nation’s schools and colleges,” said Ellenville Police Chief Phillip Mattracion. “No one can take the approach that it can’t, or won’t happen here. The fact of the matter is that it can happen here and therefore this agency, and its partners in law enforcement take all threats against our children, staff and community’s educational system, very seriously.”
The chief said every threat will be taken seriously and investigated “to ensure that those responsible are held accountable, and that our schools remain a safe haven for our children and staff.”
