GOSHEN – The Newburgh man who beat another man to death with a metal pipe outside a Newburgh bar in April was sentenced in Orange County Court to 18 years to life in prison.
Alvaro Ramos-Lopez, 27, bludgeoned Armando Soriano-Martel, 40, of Newburgh on April 3 outside Rey Del Pollo Bar and Restaurant on Washington Street.
“The victim in this case was without fault. He was brutally attacked by the defendant and we believe that the plea in the sentence is appropriate for the crime,” said District Attorney David Hoovler. The DA sought a sentence of 20 years to life, but Judge Nicholas DeRosa handed down an 18-year-to life sentence.
Ramos-Lopez was arrested in Westchester County two days later and was charged with murder.
“Senseless acts of violence plague our communities, and that is especially true when perpetrators use weapons against their victims,” said Hoovler. “My office will work together with victims, police and community leaders to address the issue of violence in this county. Together we will strive to make Orange County a safer place to live.”
