KINGSTON – The former chairman
of the Wallkill Fire District’s Board of Commissioners pled guilty
on Friday in Ulster County Court to stealing close to $240,000.
Michael Denardo, 38, of Wallkill pled guilty to felony grand larceny and three counts of criminal tax fraud as misdemeanors. He agreed to pay full restitution.
Authorities said Denardo, who was a state corrections officer at the time, admitted conning a board member into signing blank checks, which Denardo then cashed for personal use. He began the blank-check scheme as early as 2010, laundering the money through his wife’s account through 2013, a joint investigation by the state comptroller’s office and Ulster County District Attorney’s Office found.
Sentencing is set for January 8, 2016.
