WASHINGTON – The US Department of Justice has granted Westchester County’s Forensic Science Services a $280,430 grant to analyze DNA samples more efficiently and cost effectively to reduce backlogs of DNA evidence.
“Sexual assault has no place in our society, and offenders must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” said Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D, NY17). “Unfortunately, there is a staggering amount of DNA evidence waiting to be processed across the country. We cannot delay justice for the victims of sexual assault any longer,” she said, noting the grant will help Westchester reduce its backlog.
The grant will enable the county to purchase new laboratory supplies and equipment, increase access to training opportunities and travel monies, provide a quality assurance standards audit, and allow the county to hire temporary laboratory technician support staff.
