NEW CITY – A Spring Valley man has been sentenced in Rockland County
Court to 25 years to life in prison for killing a woman with whom he had
just spent the evening.

Juan Perez-Coira, 45, was convicted after a bench trial of two counts
of murder, two counts of attempted criminal sexual act and one count of
attempted rape, all as felonies.

Perez-Coira attempted to rape the victim, Deborah Burns, 55, and in the
course of the attack, caused her death as a result of internal bleeding.

“The defendant took the life of an innocent woman during a vicious
sexual assault,” said District Attorney Thomas Zugibe. “I
can only hope that the victim’s family finds some measure of comfort
and solace knowing her attack will be sentenced to at least 25 years as
punishment for his savagery.”
