KINGSTON – The Federated Sportsmen’s Clubs of Ulster County will be the beneficiary of $15,000 from the county next year as County Executive Michael Hein announced on Thursday that he will include the funds in the county’s 2016 budget.
The money will be appropriated as part of the Healthy Ulster County initiative to make the county the healthiest in the state. This money will be used to promote firearms safety, increase suicide prevention efforts in conjunction with the county’s SPEAK coalition (Suicide Prevention Education Awareness Knowledge) and help provide activities that encourage youths and adults to enjoy all of the outdoor activities in the county.
“This is a common sense solution to improving basic firearms safety and training within our community,” Hein said.
Sheriff Paul Van Blarcum said the county takes handgun safety training “very seriously” and the county is fortunate to have the sportsmen’s federation involved in providing “quality instruction to anyone who is seeking a firearm permit.”
Federation President Joe Liuni said the organization provides “programs that promote outdoor recreational activities and ensure[s] safe and responsible gun ownership for the residents of Ulster County.”
