NEWBURGH – Any municipality in New York that would like to establish red light cameras must secure state legislative approval. The Town of Wallkill will be seeking that when lawmakers return to session in January.
In the City of Newburgh, the issue has been discussed for the last couple of years and Mayor Judy Kennedy said she would like to see them not just for traffic light enforcement but for speeding as well.
“I have lived in three other states that use cameras to regulate traffic,” the mayor said. “It has been well, well documented that it does a great job. I also believe that this state, at the state level, should not be regulating what the cities do.”
Kennedy said all cities should be allowed to regulate traffic in ways they deem appropriate and not have to seek state approval.
