POUGHKEEPSIE – Dutchess County Clerk Bradford Kendall Wednesday warned county residents to be aware of private companies offering to retrieve a certified copy of their deed and mail it back to them. The companies say they will obtain the deed from the county clerk’s office.
Those companies charge as much as $83 for a deed and more for a mortgage.
Kendall called that sales pitch “nothing more than a cynical attempt to make money off the hardworking residents of Dutchess County.”
The latest solicitation being sent to local residents costs $72 more than a certified copy of a deed from the clerk’s office. A certified copy provided by Kendall’s office costs only $6 in person or $11 by mail.
Kendall said a resident may obtain a copy at his office at 22 Market Street in Poughkeepsie or by requesting a copy of their deed or any document by sending their request by mail to the Record Room at his office.
