NEWBURGH – Mayor Judy Kennedy said
the violence plaguing society goes beyond Newburgh. Her comments came
in the wake of the shooting death of Samuel Stubbs, 67, early Thursday
morning as he played cards with two other men. The others, ages 30 and
34, were wounded.
“This is senseless nonsense” precipitated often by a drug
culture nationwide, said Kennedy of the fourth murder in Newburgh this
year.
“This is a violent culture we live in. When you are listening to
violent movies, you are playing violent video games; you are talking violent
in your music. Everywhere around us in violence and the kids are growing
up without any conscious about just taking out a gun and killing somebody,”
she said.
The incident, at 1:33 a.m. on Thursday, occurred at South Lander Street
and Courtney Avenue.
Police Chief Daniel Cameron said the other victims sustained non-life
threatening wounds.
He said the motive appears to be a robbery of the men, who were participating
in a card game.
State Police and the Orange County District Attorney’s Office are
assisting in the investigation.
Anyone with information is asked to call Newburgh Police at 845-561-3131.
