HUDSON VALLEY – Communities across the region participated in Tuesday
evening’s annual National Night Out events, designed to strengthen
police-community relations.
In the Town of Wallkill, the event drew an estimated 1,000 people to participate in games, enjoy hamburgers and hotdogs and interact with police officers.
Police Chief Robert Hertman has been hosting the annual event for 14 years.
“Our goal is to allow these interactions to carry over past Night Out,” Hertman said. “This way when members of the community interact with officers in maybe a potential situation that could otherwise be confrontational it will be deescalated because the officers develop a relationship with people in a setting like this.”
The evening is also aimed at sending a message that crime will not be tolerated.
