TOWN OF WALLKILL – The Town of Wallkill Volunteer Ambulance Corps has announced that effective immediately it is raising the starting salary of its emergency medical technicians to $15 per hour.
The agency receives no town government financial support; it subsists solely on money collected from insurance billing.
“American salaries historically have been low by international standards with EMT salaries in general trailing well below the national average and just barely above the poverty level in most states,” said TOWVAC spokeswoman Teri Barbee. “Without industry standards, ambulance companies have long been taking advantage of EMS workers and TOWVAC felt that it was time to take responsibility for the role we play in our EMS community and set an example for others to follow.”
