WASHINGTON – Congressman Christopher
Gibson (R, NY19) is a retired career Army officer and for Republican presidential
candidate Donald Trump to say that Senator John McCain (R, Arizona) is
not a war hero because he was captured during the Vietnam War is disappointing.
Gibson said not a day goes by that he doesn’t think of the parents of the soldiers lost during his command in Iraq.
For Trump to speak ill of McCain, who spent 5 ½ years as a POW, is not right, said Gibson.
“You can any view you want about John McCain’s politics, but to question his service like that is highly inappropriate and I would hope that going forward that Mr. Trump would show the proper respect to all veterans and keep his comments focused and constructive,” Gibson said.
The comments from Trump, who is financing his own campaign for president, have been criticized by a host of Republicans and Democrats alike and the national GOP leadership has condemned them.
