NEW WINDSOR – A full feasibility study iwill be conducted for a microgrid project at Stewart Airport.
The study would evaluate the potential of a resilient microgrid at the airport that would also benefit critical facilities in the Town of New Windsor, said Central Hudson spokesman John Maserjian.
“We see Stewart as a critical facility here in the Hudson Valley not only for passenger service, but also for military operations and also emergency operations,” Maserjian said.  “For example, during Hurricane Sandy utility crews were flown from across the country to Stewart to assist in the restoration in the Hudson Valley and New York City area. This facility really is an important one not just for the Hudson Valley, but for New York City and the eastern New York region.”
Central Hudson Gas and Electric Corporation, NRG Energy, Inc., the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and the Town of New Windsor have partnered on the study, which will be funded by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority through the NY Prize community microgrid competition.
The state program is a $40 million competition through NYSERDA to help communities create microgrids that can operate independently in the event of a power outage.
The Stewart study will be funded by a $100,000 grant to evaluate the feasibility, benefits and cost.
If the project study is approved, it may be eligible for up to $1 million for development of detailed designs, and if selected up to $7 million for construction.
