MONTICELLO – Local business leaders
continue to brainstorm how to revive the Broadway business district in
the Village of Monticello.

They are hoping that visitors to the soon-to-be built nearby casino-resort-recreation
venue in Kiamesha Lake will be drawn to localities like Monticello when
they come to Sullivan County.

Jeffrey Siegel’s Monticello Bagel Festival, to be held on August
16 this year, has been a huge success in its first two year

Among those efforts by Steven Kurlander, a local communications specialist,
is to create a restaurant and hospitality association for Monticello as
one step toward reviving the local economy.

“People in Monticello and the businesses in Monticello need to help
themselves more than anything else and we need a strong voice in terms
of the hospitality and restaurants,” he said. Kurlander is going
to work on creating such an association so they can do some marketing
for the village eating establishments. “We have the bagel festival;
we are going to try to do some other events during the year to draw people
back into the village.”
The business leaders are also discussing placing art in the windows of
vacant Broadway storefronts in a further effort to spruce up the area.
