NEWBURGH – The Newburgh City Democratic Committee voted not to endorse a mayoral candidate. Three are running – incumbent Judy Kennedy, Councilwoman Gay Lee and party Chairman Jonathan Jacobson.
The committee also at its Tuesday night meeting asked Jacobson to step
down from the chairman role because he is a candidate, and committeewoman
and City Councilwoman Cindy Holmes as vice chairwoman because she is Jacobson’s
campaign manager. As a result, both resigned from their posts.
Kennedy said the committee will have to meet within 30 days and select a new chairman.
“The outcome of all of that is the primary will determine who is going to be on the general ballot in November,” Kennedy said. “I know there were a lot of people that were conflicted as to who to vote for and they didn’t want to do that and this was a way to avoid that public decision.”
The Democratic committee also voted not to endorse anyone for the two city council seats that will be up for grabs this November.
So far the Republicans have yet to field a candidate for mayor.
