MIDDLETOWN – Western New York native MaryEllen Elia was appointed on Tuesday as the new state commissioner of education and president of the University of the State of New York.
Elia served as superintendent in Hillsborough County, Florida, which includes Tampa, for ten years since 2005.  She was let go from that position earlier this year.  She started her career in education as a social studies teacher in Buffalo.
Middletown Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Eastwood is taking a “wait and watch” attitude regarding the new commissioner.
“I am very hopeful that this individual understands the need to protect and stand behind public schools and make sure that we get our fair funding and that we achieve the things that public schools can do for all kids in our state,” Eastwood said.
Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther (D, Forestburgh) is also hopeful that Elia’s emphasis is on public education.
“I hope her number one priority is making our public schools in New York State successful and make sure they are providing the appropriate amount of money so our children receive a great education,” Gunther said.
Elia will earn $250,000 annually in her new post.
