BUCHANAN – Entergy has returned its Indian Point Unit 3 nuclear power plant to service generating electricity following a 16-day outage to replace the failed main electrical transformer that blew and caught fire. The unit had shut down automatically when the transformer failed on May 9.
Indian Point Unit 2 continued to operate at full power and was not affected by the Unit 3 shutdown.
Entergy is also working with the Coast Guard and the state Department of Environmental Conservation to investigate and mitigate the environmental impact of the transformer oil leaking into the Hudson River.
Company personnel have conducted assessments of some 25 locations based on observations regarding potential oil sheens in the Hudson River, implementing appropriate mitigation efforts at a handful of sites. Environmental experts determined no action was needed at another approximately 20 locations.
Entergy intends to announce its preliminary understanding of the cause of the transformer failure by the end of June.
