BEACON – Police have identified the
man shot and killed by police on I-84 near exit 11 on Thursday afternoon
as Michael Murphy, 38, of West Simsbury, CT.

The incident remains under investigation and State Police ask anyone who
witnessed the incident to call them at 845-677-7300.

Murphy was killed after he carjacked a vehicle at knifepoint in the City
of Beacon, abandoned it a short time later and led Beacon Police on a
chase through a wooded area that wound up on I-84 near the Newburgh-Beacon
Bridge.

Eye witness Ellen Friedman told MidHudsonNews.com that she saw Murphy
waive a large knife more than 10 feet away from police, who opened fire
shooting him four times.

The Dutchess County District Attorney’s Office is investigating
