Brooklyn man arrested on Thruway with 80 forged checks

NEW PALTZ – State Police on Monday
arrested a Brooklyn man on the Thruway in New Paltz on a number of charges
including possession of some 80 forged instruments including fraudulent
Western Union checks, Allstate checks and Money Gram checks.
Frank Vargas, 33, was arrested after a brief pursuit on the Thruway. He had three active warrants for his arrest including a felony state parole warrant. Investigation revealed a small amount of heroin and the forged instruments.
Troopers charged Vargas with the felonies of reckless endangerment and 12 counts of possession of a forged instrument. He was also charged with driving while ability impaired, unlawful fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle and criminal possession of drugs, all misdemeanors.  He was sent to the Ulster County Jail without bail pending a future court appearance.
