WHITE PLAINS – A Tarrytown man was sentenced in Westchester County Court on Thursday to shock probation, six months in county jail, and five years of post-release supervision on his guilty plea to felony manslaughter in the death of Megan Bookstaver.
On Monday, September 2, 2013, Labor Day, Eric Gaulin, 26, Bokstaver, who was his girlfriend, and a mutual friend, spent time together at the Palisades Center Mall in West Nyack. They went to Dicks Sporting Goods store where they purchased a rifle for the victim in a pink and black camouflage color, along with a box of ammunition for a rifle owned by Gaulin.  They all then went to Gaulin’s Tarrytown home where he took out several other rifles he owned.
At about 4:20 p.m., a shot rang out and the victim was struck in the face by a bullet from one of the rifles, killing Bookstaver.
“Having any type of firearm in one’s possession is a full-time job,” said Westchester District Attorney Janet DiFiore. “As evidences in this case, one cannot emphasize enough how a gun owner must know how to use, handle and store a firearm safely. The defendant, by abrogating that responsibility was liable for the outcome that resulted in the tragic consequences for all involved.”
