Rats attack abandoned dog, owner charged with animal cruelty

Rocky had to be put down because of his deteriorated
condition, which included rat bites

NEWBURGH – A City of Newburgh man has been charged with two counts
of cruelty to animals and failure to provide proper sustenance after went
on vacation for five weeks and left his three-year-old Staffordshire Terrier
named Rocky tied up in his backyard without food, water, shelter or veterinary
care.

The Humane Law Enforcement Division of the Hudson Valley SPCA investigated
the case.

The dog was left outside in below freezing temperatures and snow and when
the owner, Edwardo Maceda, 23, returned home, the animal weighed 35 pounds,
losing half of his body weight.

Rocky was unable to stand, bark, lift his head, eat or drink had hypothermia,
and was unable to defend himself from rat attacks.

Rocky was brought to a veterinarian, who had to put him down because of
his deteriorated condition.

Maceda was arraigned in Newburgh City Court and the case is continuing.
