Simmons
GOSHEN – Orange County Legislator Dennis Simmons of Port Jervis has been tapped as the new county commissioner of jurors. He replaces Toni Murphy, who retired from the post after serving for several years.
Simmons was chosen by a committee comprised of County Legislature Chairman Stephen Brescia, Supreme Court Justice Elaine Slobod and County Court Judge Jeffrey Berry.
He was one of eight people who applied for the position that holds a four year term, said Brescia.
“We felt he fit the bill,” Brescia said. “He interviewed very well and has good credentials. He has a long career in corrections and county government, city government; we feel he has what it takes to do the job.”
Simmons, a Republican, will have to resign from the county legislature
and a special election will be held to fill the remainder of his term.
The Port Jervis City Council and Deerpark Town Board will select someone
to fill the legislative seat for the rest of this year.
