NEW YORK – The Sullivan West and Port
Jervis school districts are among 20 statewide that have just signed agreements
with the state attorney general’s office to ensure educational access
for students regardless of their immigration status or that of their parents
or guardians.

The two districts agreed to remove inquiries into citizenship/immigration
status from their enrollment materials, as well as to develop new enrollment
procedures and provide training to responsible personnel to ensure that
students do not face those barriers when seeking to enroll.

“Attorney General (Eric) Schneiderman is focused on ensuring every
district across the state is compliant with the law,” said spokesman
Nick Benson. “The school districts that were listed entered into
agreements following complaints and other problems identified by our office.
We expect every school district t comply with state law and to not erect
barriers to entry for students based on their immigration status.”

The other districts that signed the agreements were Amherst, Carthage,
Cheektowaga, Cuba Rushford, Dryden, Gates Chili, Greenville, Hilton, Homer,
Lyme, Manschester-Shortville, Penfield, Pittsford, Spencerport, Vestal,
Williamson, Oneida, and Watertown.
