New Paltz town planning board member runs for village mayor

NEW PALTZ – A local businesswoman, who is a member of the New Paltz Town Planning Board, will run for mayor of the Village of New Paltz on May 5.
Amy Cohen, an 18-year resident of the village, plans on making the formal announcement next Monday; however, she announced on a Facebook page that she will seek the village’s top job.
Current Mayor Jason West, who has served two non-consecutive four-year terms, has not yet decided if he will seek reelection. That decision will come in the next several weeks, he said.
Cohen cites as her experience, 25 years in business, serving on the town planning board, and past experience as a New Paltz police commissioner and member of the town/village consolidation study committee.
If elected, Cohen said she would work to create a village/town water district; improve working relationships between the town and village; fix aging infrastructure; promote volunteerism; advocate for children’s, pedestrian and cyclist safety; cut spending and lower taxes; and increase the tax base.
