SLEEPY HOLLOW – Remediation site work at the former Duracell Inc. site in the Village of Sleepy Hollow, which began in 2012, has been suspended during the winter months. The cleanup work is expected to resume in March and be completed during the construction season in 2015.
From 1944 to 1984, a battery manufacturing facility operated at the site at 60 Elm Street. It was originally operated by P.R. Mallory; Duracell began operations there in 1979.  As a result of the battery production, over 1,600 soil samples were taken and analyzed with mercury levels that required cleanup.
An environmental company, with oversight from the state DEC, has been performing the work. A community air monitoring program is implemented during the cleanup process.
