KINGSTON – The sale and use of fireworks in New York State are illegal, but a modification of the law could allow the sale and use of sparklers. That has prompted Ulster County Legislator Richard Gerentine to propose a local law that would allow the sale and use of those devices.
“I have been shown that when given the opportunity to purchase safe ‘sparkler devices’, firework-related injuries actually go down,” he said. He said that in Connecticut, which legalized the use of sparklers in 2000, injuries decreased by 58 percent by 2014.
Gerentine said the proposed local law could generate new revenue for the county “when other economic development strategies, such as a casino, have not.”
The local law has been submitted for consideration at the February 17 session of the county legislature.
