Teenage girl jumps from second story window, escapes fire

NEWBURGH – A 15-year-old girl escaped flames in her family’s apartment at 79 William Street in the City of Newburgh early Friday morning by jumping out a second-floor window. She suffered bruises on the 10-15 foot fall.

Her mother and three siblings escaped on their own when the fire was discovered at 2:35 a.m., said Assistant Fire Chief Steve Giacco.

The second floor of the three-story, six-apartment dwelling sustained the most damage with the kitchen being gutted and the remainder having smoke, heat and water damage. The first floor, which is under renovations and was vacant, sustained smoke and water damage. The third floor sustained smoke damage.

The girl was taken to St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh where she was treated for her injuries.
