| Townsend calls public meeting about future of Camp LaGuardia |
|
CHESTER – Orange County Legislator Gregory Townsend says there are too many unanswered questions about the future of the county-owned Camp LaGuardia property that straddles Chester and Blooming Grove, so he is teaming up with Town of Chester Supervisor Steven Neuhaus and other local municipal officials to hold a public meeting on Monday evening, June 30. The session will begin at 8 p.m. at Chester Academy in Chester. Townsend said he is concerned about infrastructure that would be developed in order to build on the property as well as the continuing debate over which company would be sold the former New York City homeless shelter. There has been too much flip-flopping going on, he said. “There are too many misnomers, there’s too many ‘what if’s’ type situations. I really think we have a due diligence to find out what’s out there, what are they really providing, what are they really looking to do and let’s make an educated decision.” Neuhaus has been opposed to this latest selection of Easy Equities since the beginning of the process. “The only reason why that it’s being looked at right now is that it gives the county the money right up front, no conditions and they walk away from it, but that’s not always the best decision.” Initially, the county narrowed down the field of proposed developers to three and the Physical Services Committee of the County Legislature a month ago voted to recommend the Aristotelian University Assurance Realty Group of Newark, NJ. Earlier this week, the committee members flip-flopped and decided to now recommend to the full legislature the sale to Easy Equities of New York. Since that committee action, the third company, Mountco, has launched a public awareness campaign aimed at the county lawmakers and the public to inform them as to why they believe they are the best choice.
