New Stewart hotel, development comes before Orange IDA

GOSHEN – The owners of the Hilton Homewood Suites at Stewart Airport Wednesday announced plans to build second hotel adjacent to their current one.

The new one, to be a Fairfield Inn by Marriott, will have 87 rooms and employ 25 people.

One of Airport VIII’s partners, Richard O’Beirne, brought the project to the Orange County Industrial Development Agency seeking financial assistance in building the facility. No action was taken by the board.

First Columbia, the company that is developing New York International Plaza at the airport, wants to build a 20,000 square foot Class A office building. Company Vice President Chris Bette told the IDA they plan on building the facility on speculation without any tenants lined up.

“We need to get some inventory for ourselves and for the county as well,” he said. “There is not a lot of Class A office space around, although we are competing with some of the older product that has been here since the ‘80s. We are hopeful we can attract some tenants to the airport.”

Bette’s company already has three occupied office buildings on the 260 acre former Stewart Army Subpost.

His company is looking for IDA financial benefits to assist it in funding the project.
